Sage
Sage is a pure bred German shepherd that was given to Saving SPOT! because her owner could not find a home for her. She was 8-weeks old and could not hold down her food. She was regurgitating everything she ate and was losing weight. The vets thought she had a puppy bug of some kind. A nice family adopted her, but Sage continued to lose weight. She ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. Through the chest x-rays the vets determined Sage had a mega-esophagus. Basically, she had a kink in her esophagus which was preventing the food from getting to her stomach.
The vets told us that the only way to prevent Sage from getting pneumonia again was to syringe fee her small meals in an upright position. So, at first, it took 2 of us to feed her 6 times a day. Then one of our amazing employees built her a high chair. For 6-months the Saving SPOT! staff fed Sage a liquid diet 6 times a day in her chair. She began gaining weight and stopped throwing up. When the vets x-rayed her again, the diverticulum was gone. Slowly, we began to feed her regularly. The only explanation the vets have for her recovery is that the Saving SPOT! staff's love and patience allowed Sage to heal. She will now lead a long and happy life as a normal pup.
